One big white wall, one navy velvet sofa and about forty frames later, my living room finally looks like the inside of my head.
For two years my living room had one big, empty, white wall. I told myself I was waiting for the perfect piece of art. The truth? I was scared of committing. This makeover is what happened when I stopped waiting and started hanging.
The before
White walls, a grey sofa, a sensible rug. It looked fine. It felt like a hotel lobby. Nothing in the room told you who lived there.
The plan
- Anchor the room with colour: a deep navy velvet sofa to make every frame above it glow.
- Go floor-to-ceiling: a gallery wall that covers the whole wall, not a polite cluster of six frames.
- Mix everything: prints, original paintings, thrifted oils, kids’ drawings, a neon slogan or two.
- Add soft chaos: patterned cushions, a teal throw and always, always fresh flowers.
How I hung 40 frames without losing my mind
- Lay everything out on the floor first and take a photo from above.
- Start with your biggest, boldest piece slightly off-centre at eye level.
- Build outwards, keeping roughly 5 cm gaps. Consistent gaps make chaos look intentional.
- Mix frame colours on purpose: gold, black, neon pink, raw wood.
- Use paper templates and painter’s tape on the wall before any nail goes in.
The budget
Sofa (second-hand): €350. Frames (mostly thrifted and spray-painted): €140. Art: €0 to €80 each, many swapped with friends. Cushions and throw: €60. Total: about €780.
The after
Every time I walk in, my eyes land somewhere new. Guests don’t sit down straight away; they stand and look. That’s the whole point. Your walls are the biggest canvas you own, so fill them with things you love.
